Raleigh is a historical masterpiece. Its rich cultural and historical legacy make it a perfect place for those who value culture. But, not many know that this city was indeed named after Sir Walter Raleigh. A believer that the heart mattered more than the head, Raleigh met an untimely death. But the city named after him lives on.

Historical Fast Facts about Raleigh

  • In 1792, Raleigh was created as the seat of government for North Carolina. The history and delightful complex composition of the state has added to its rich historical legacy.
  • This historical town is also the birthplace of Virginia Dare, the first child born of English parents in a new world
  • Though it was one of the original colonies, North Carolina was the first to call for independence with Halifax Resolves in 1776. 
  • This is among the first industrial areas in the South and it is also known as the Smithsonian of the South because of its massive confluence of educational centers and museums
  • North Carolina also invested in paved thoroughfares and was known as the good roads state which makes it perfect for those who see this city as a lifeline for the economic growth of the state.

  • Sir Walter Raleigh, an English explorer, writer and soldier established a colony in Virginia and was the chief figure after which the city was named. 
  • Raleigh was held prisoner in the Tower of London and put to death, but the city named after him has done well from the political point of view.
